The Need
We all have things we care about and want to share. Sometimes we feel our ideas can even change the world, and
we want to let other people know how they can join in and make all our lives better.
The Northeast
Thailand Project was founded in order to provide need based scholarships for girls in the Isan region of Thailand to graduate
from high school. The need is great as each year thousands of young girls are unable to continue their education beyond
junior high school due to financial issues within their families. These young girls find themselves in a position where
they are expected to contribute to the family, yet do not have the education to obtain meaningful employment. Often
they are the targets of unscrupulous recruiters who offer them employment in the larger cities, but when they arrive for these
jobs, they find themselves confined to horrible living conditions and working in the bars and massage parlors in the city.
They endure this in order to support their families back home. It is a vicious cycle where they return home after
a few years often infected with AIDS, with children to support, yet they are unable to support these children.
It
is our intention to help break this cycle of poverty by providing scholarships to these young girls through high school and
then support them as they continue their education in either a vocational school or the university. Once a scholarship
is given, the intent is to support the student to the end of their education goal. Of course, satisfactory academic
progress along with behavior is expected in order for the scholarship to continue.
Our project
is a completely volunteer organization. We do not have any paid staff, office rental cost, and no staff vehicles. Our
intention is to use all funds that are generated for the benefit of our scholarship students.
